No Room to Start Making Demands for Roger Clemens

Roger Clemens happens to be a little bullheaded.

But demanding he not just help out the majors, but additionally pitch against a contender at half a century old is certainly going too much.

Houston Astros owner Jim Crane stated on Monday that “there is a possibility” Clemens will pitch for baseball’s worst team this year, but he noted he wouldn’t start him against a contender.

Clemens rapidly responded, telling KRIV-Houston, via ESPN:

“I will tell you at this time and they’d know, too, when I had been going to go get it done, I’m going to pitch against a contender, that’s who I would like to get rid of. Why would i would like to waste time playing around and getting fit. I recieve over to Minute Maid (Park), I’ll crank up and obtain it over 90 for a contender. We’ll knock them right from the 2010 nfl playoffs. That might be the enjoyment. Pitching against somebody that isn’t in contention would not be any fun for me.”

It isn’t going to happen.

You will find a couple of things wrong with this particular statement.

Why would Clemens want to “waste” his time getting fit if he will not pitch for a contender? Well, that’s simple, because he’s been “wasting” his amount of time in a completely independent league for an chance to help out the majors.

When you’re turning 51 years of age in August, your resume kind of is out your window.

Whatever your ideas are about Clemens’ reference to the infamous Mitchell Report, that’s near the point. The thing is, he’s acting such as the self-titled superathlete who makes fans bitter about professional sports. The Astros are frankly doing him a big favor by entertaining the idea of adding him to the roster.

Also, I apologize that pitching against a non-contender “would not be fun” for Clemens, but baseball is really a team game&mdashno matter how bad that team is. Clemens makes his stance obvious: I’m over the team.

What about doing the work just to return to hitting for the romance of the overall game? You realize, the perfect feeling you receive when both you and your teammates rally for a victory, or fight valiantly in defeat?

That’s apparently a lengthy-lost feeling for the Rocket.

The sad news would be that the Astros could certainly bow to Clemens’ demands, since the fanbase is frustrated and, frankly, Clemens sells tickets. Don’t believe the seven-time Cy Youthful champion does not realize that.

One thing’s for sure: Clemens has hurt his status, even when you dismiss the accusations of him taking performance-improving drugs throughout his career.
